General Info

Monkey Mei Tai carriers come in ‘Baby’ and ‘Toddler / Preschooler’ sizes.  As each child is unique, our age suggestions are approximate and the age at which a child will outgrow our ‘baby’ size will differ from child to child.

  • Baby size is suitable for children up to roughly 15kg in weight (typically around 18 months old) and measures approximately 16″ high by 17″ wide*;
  • Toddler / Preschooler size is slightly larger and is suitable for children of approximately 12kg – 30kg (typically around 15 months upwards) and measures approximately 19″ high by 20″ wide*.
  • Custom sizes can be ordered for a small extra charge, if you prefer something a little different to our standard sizes.

Although our carriers are capable of carrying far heavier weights (see our Safety demo), we do not recommend carrying a child weighing over 30kg.  Our Infinity straps prolong the useful life of your carrier even further, allowing full width, knee-to-knee support for your growing child – even after they outgrow the panel!

* While every effort is made to ensure your carrier’s exact measurements, we do allow a variation of up to 1″

In short: a standard carrier is created from a wide range of fabrics, a wrap conversion is created solely from a woven wrap (fabric designed specifically for carrying babies).

For more detailed information, please see the ‘Standard Carriers‘ and ‘Wrap Conversion‘ pages.

Absolutely!  Having lived at a BFPO address ourselves, we both know how frustrating it can be when UK companies won’t ship to you (it’s a UK postcode, people!).  We are delighted to ship to a BFPO address and will never charge you more than the standard UK rate to do so.  If you are a member of the UK Armed Forces, don’t forget you are entitled to a 10% discount!

We are also happy to offer shipping within the EU.  Postage and packaging rates are charged at cost, so if you are an international customer, please do contact us for an accurate quote for shipping.

Monkey Mei Tai currently operate a waiting list system. We sew carriers in small batches, meaning there are a set number of ‘slots’ available each month for custom carriers.  If you would like your own custom-made carrier, please visit the ‘Bespoke Carriers‘ page for details on what to do next

If you’d like a ready-made carrier, check our Online Shop for stock and availability.

As time progresses, sometimes our needs will change, and you may decide you prefer a buckle-waist, or wish you’d chosen Infinity straps.  Or maybe you’ve bought a second-hand carrier that isn’t quite perfect for you and you’d like something altering.  This is understandable, but unfortunately we are unable to change our carriers once they are made.  There are two reasons for this decision:

  • Changes of this nature will involve a lot of unpicking.  The MINIMUM amount of work involved would include unpicking the multiple rows or topstitching, and carefully unpicking the 5 rows of extra strong structural thread.  This is extremely time-consuming and would often end up costing more than a new carrier would have!
  • Sewing back over a previously unpicked area is not a good idea.  When we sew our carriers, we are creating those stitches ‘for life’.  They are not intended to be unpicked, and the fabrics involved are not intended to be reused.  Unpicking and re-stitching will almost certainly weaken the fabric, and we can no longer offer the absolute certainty that we can with our new carriers.

The only exception to this rule is the shortening of shoulder straps (within reason!), and, sometimes, shortening the padded portion of the Infinity straps.  We are willing to do this as it does not affect the structure or use of the finished carrier in any way.

Pricing Info

Wrap conversions start at £84.99, and standard carriers at £94.99.  For more information and a full price list including all extras, please click here.

We do indeed!  If you are a member of the UK Armed Forces (or spouse) we offer a 10% discount*.  Just remember to mention it when ordering.

Don’t forget, Sling Libraries are also entitled to 20% off all library stock*.

* Discount does not apply to any wrap provided by us, or any artwork.

Postage & packaging is charged at cost.

UK / BFPO Shipping

Our UK shipping rate for carriers  is currently £11 ((via Royal Mail Special Delivery & subject to any price changes made by Royal Mail) and we certainly won’t charge you any extra for BFPO delivery!

For smaller items (such as framed embroidery, cowl scarves, breastpads etc), the shipping charge is £1.50 + 50p for each additional item.  If the order totals over £20 in value, then it will be shipped via Royal Mail Recorded Delivery which is £2.50 + 50p for each additional item.

EU Shipping

For ready-made carriers, there will be a surcharge of £9 (+ £1 for each additional carrier) to cover the difference in shipping costs.

For smaller items (such as framed embroidery, cowl scarves, breastpads etc), the shipping charge is £3.00 + 50p for each additional item.  If the order totals over £20 in value, then it will be shipped via Royal Mail’s ‘International Tracked & Signed’ which is £8.00 + 50p for each additional item.

If the actual cost to ship your items comes in at less than what you paid, we will refund you.

Yes, they certainly do!  If you run a sling library, we offer a 20% discount*. This only applies to library stock, of course (not carriers intended for personal use), and is not restricted to UK libraries, either!

We also have a ‘queue jump’ system for sling libraries – there is no need to enter our slot draw, just let me know, and we can arrange a convenient month for your carrier to be made.

* Discount does not apply to any wrap provided by us, or any artwork.

When payment is due, we will send you an invoice.  Customers are not asked to ‘pay upfront’ as most of our customers request some form of artwork, and invoices are drawn up once this is complete.  This ensures we only charge for the time actually taken.

We offer a number of different payment options:

  • Bank transfer (our details will be provided on your invoice.  Overseas customers – your bank may charge a fee for this service)
  • Paypal
  • Cheque (please allow up to 10 days for funds to clear into our account)
  • Cash

There is an option on the order form for you to tell us your preferred payment method.  Your £20 deposit (and any additional fabric deposits) will be deducted from your final invoice.

Wrap Conversion Info

We can work with just about any length of wrap or wrap scrap.  Listed below are a few options for each size of wrap.  Please note, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of this list for your particular wrap.  Each wrap is different and features such as the length of any tapers, or even the width of the wrap, will need to be factored in.  We recommend that you ‘add a size’ for Ellevill wraps, to account for their enormous tapers, although this is not an exact science.  Feel free to contact us for more specific information.

Although this particular carrier is made from two different wraps, we felt its contrasting sides made for a better illustration. In our illustrations, the main side features a blue body panel and a blue hood piece.  The reverse side features a pink body panel with a pink hood piece.  The waist and shoulder straps are both blue.  Any components not made from wrap will be shown blacked out.

A full wrap conversion consists of two body panels (main & reverse), shoulder straps and waist straps/buckle waistband.  Hoods consist of two sides (main & reverse).  If you do not have enough wrap for a full conversion, there are many fabric options.  Straps can be made from another wrap, cotton drill, or corduroy; body panels and hoods can be made from another wrap, cotton, Minky, silk, fleece, or just about any non-sheer fabric you can think of.

I am frequently asked whether I will send wrap scraps back to customers, and it constantly surprises me. Scraps are *always* sent back as standard: the wrap belongs to you, so obviously any scraps do too!
I do make an exception for the teeny tiny scraps like these, which I send to a recycling program to be processed and turned into fresh textiles or insulation:

Monkey Mei Tai Scraps
This photo shows the average amount of your wrap that I ‘keep’ – although if you’d like every last scrap back, you only have to ask.

We’d rather you didn’t!  Brand new wraps are not only easier for us to work with (and hence produce a crisper finished product), they have more life left in them.  Fibres don’t last forever, so in order to get the maximum use out of your Monkey Mei Tai Wrap Conversion, we recommend brand new, or as-new wraps.

Just a wash and an iron and they’re good to go!

We sew in small batches as we have found this to be the best balance between efficiency and customer wait times.  As a result, your carrier will be sewn, alongside others, over the course of one month.  Sometimes there is some wiggle room in this estimate, but as a general rule, you should expect your carrier to be finished and in the post by the last day of the month of your slot.

Unless otherwise stated, all our mei tais are made from 100% cotton fabrics, with the exception of Minky / cuddlesoft fabric, which is 100% polyester.  We will always list full details of any fabrics used in semi-custom or in-stock carriers.  Our fabrics are pre-washed using eco-detergents or soap nuts.  We do not use fabric softeners, stain removers, or bleach.

If you have any allergies, we recommend that you contact us prior to ordering, as we cannot guarantee the absence of certain allergens, including (but not limited to): cats / cat hair, pollen, latex and various foodstuffs.  As Monkey Mei Tai carriers are created in-house, we cannot create a sterile environment, although obviously all sensible and reasonable precautions are taken to avoid any potential transfer of allergens to your carrier.

The second-hand sling market is booming, and often a great way to pick up a bargain!  Bear in mind, however, that caveat emptor still applies, and you should always make sure you know exactly what you’re buying.

Whenever we make a sling we add its photos and details to a Facebook album; we recommend that you find the album of the sling for sale and double-check the details.  Be sure to ask about any flaws / damage / wear and tear and whether they are structural or just cosmetic.  If the sling has been altered since purchase (including but not limited to dyes, hood alterations, added accessories, embroidery etc), we cannot accept any responsibility for problems.  If you are in any doubt as to the details of the original carrier, or if you’re worried whether a flaw is structural or purely cosmetic please do get in touch and we will be more than happy to help if we can.

Safety is obviously our top priority, and unfortunately we find some wraps are just not suitable to be transformed into a traditional wrap conversion.  This includes gauze wraps, stretchy wraps, shifty wraps, very thin wraps and wraps with no cotton content.  Due to the variation between them and / or possible washing and care issues, we do not accept Didymos Prima, Lisca, or Pfau; or any wool-, silk-, or cashmere-blend wraps.  We reserve the right to refuse any wrap for conversion if we feel it isn’t suitable, so please do contact us if you have an unusual wrap and aren’t sure.

Bear in mind that fabric doesn’t last forever, so if your wrap is very loved and broken-in this might also render it unsuitable for conversion.  If possible, we always prefer brand new (or as-new) wraps as this gives your carrier the greatest longevity.

If your wrap isn’t suitable for conversion, we can always either team your wrap fabric with either another wrap, or use it as a panel on a mei tai, creating a ‘wrap tai’ that features your wrap on one or both panels.  There is always a solution!
